The United States Women’s National Team beat Canada 1-0 on Thursday in their opener of the SheBelieves Cup, barely passing an opponent in the challenge of facing the best team in the world.
Both countries wasted plenty of chances before substitute Rose Lavelle found the winner in the 79th minute with a low finish after a scramble into the box.
Thursday night’s game in Orlando, Fla. Was more complicated than expected for the USWNT, but despite missed opportunities and a few defensive breakdowns, the team recovered to win their 31st game in their last 32.

Lavelle, as she has done so many times for the USWNT, promoted again Thursday night. Whatever happens the rest of her time at City, she will continue to be greeted with open arms by her national team.

Canada is up to the challenge
Canada hasn’t beaten the United States in 20 years and very few would have expected a breakthrough on Thursday night. With several key players missing, the team not having played for nearly a year and Bev Priestman coaching their first game for the Canadiens, an unbalanced loss to their rivals would not have been shocking.
Instead, Canada put on an inspired performance, playing with great confidence on the ball and frustrating the Americans on defense. Without a twice poor finish from Janine Beckie, Canada might have even taken the lead. The USWNT were also lucky enough not to concede a penalty in the second half when Purce clearly blocked a cross into the box with his arm.
“They managed to compact the medium and did a really good job,” said Andonovski. “They were able to stop the penetration from the middle, forcing everything out of the way. It’s a little easier to defend when things are coming from the sides than from the middle.”
In the end, Canada didn’t get anything out of the game, but it seemed to be heading in the right direction early on in Priestman’s tenure.
