YouTube cuts five Burmese army-run TV channels

has removed channels connected to five TV channels operated by the Burmese army (Tatmadaw) following further violence in the country. Among the channels removed were Myanmar Radio and Television and Myawaddy Media, which broadcast Tatmadaw news, sports and propaganda.

Dozens of peaceful protesters this week during protests against last month’s coup. Protesters organized online rallies and shared footage of violence by the military and police. The Tatmadaw replied with social media services and occasionally entirely.

YouTube removed dozens of other military-related channels following Myanmar’s elections last year. It isn’t the only social media giant taking action to stem Tatmadaw’s attempts . Facebook and Instagram banned the army of these platforms last week, as well as advertisements from companies owned by Tatmadaw. Facebook blocked Mywaddy on February 2, the day after the coup.
