Gavrilova gave a slight glimpse into the aura Barty has created as a Grand Slam winner, despite being arguably the finest superstar in the sport.
Barty found the episode funny – and gave it the elevator, jokingly telling Gavrilova that she was a “dumb” for acting disheartened.
“I have no idea what it was,” Barty said TODAY.
“The truth is, she was late. I was second violin. I was like, ‘Mate, jump, it’s okay’.”
Barty and Gavrilova have long been Fed Cup (now Billie Jean King Cup) teammates for Australia. Barty will be a big favorite in the Rod Laver Arena second game on Thursday, in the second round of the Open.
Despite Barty being the seed, Gavrilova arrived as a wildcard after her rankings exploded due to injury.
“We know each other very well. We’ve played a few times, but once you cross that white line we have respect for each other, we’re just playing,” Barty said.
