Blake, a black man who was shot dead by a police officer, said he was ready to surrender once he put his knife in the car.
A black man who was shot in the back by a white police officer in the US state of Wisconsin, sparking several nights of violent protests in mid-2020 and leaving him partially paralyzed, said in an interview broadcast Thursday that he was ready to surrender just before the officer opened fire.
Jacob blake, 29, said a interview with ABC’s Good Morning America that during a fight with Kenosha police trying to arrest her on August 23 on an outstanding warrant, her pocket knife fell out of her pants. He said he picked it up before heading to a vehicle to leave with two of his children in the backseat.
“I’m not really worried. I’m pulling away from them, so it’s not like they’re going to shoot me, ”Blake said.
Blake said he was ready to surrender once he put the knife in the vehicle.
“Throw me on the ground and you know put my arms behind my back because if they did it there and killed me there, everyone would see it,” he said.
Constable Rusten Sheskey told investigators he feared Blake would stab him, so he opened fire. Blake family attorney Ben Crump, however, questioned whether Blake threatened Sheskey with a knife, saying that “nowhere does the video footage show a knife extended and aimed at establishing the requisite intent.”
Kenosha erupted with violence protests for several nights after Blake was shot. Hundreds have been arrested and several businesses have been destroyed. A Wisconsin prosecutor on January 5 decreases to file charges against Sheskey, concluding that he could not refute the officer’s claim that he had acted in self-defense.
In the Good Morning America interview, Blake, who has been shot seven times, said he shouldn’t have grabbed his knife. He said he “wasn’t thinking clearly”. He said he was unable to hear officers’ orders to comply before he was shot.

“I was counting my breaths, my blinks and I was like ‘God I’m coming. I guess that’s it for me, ”he said.
He said his thoughts were on his sons in the backseat.
