Jake Stringer struggling with Achilles and calf issues, Michael Hurley hospitalized with infection

Essendon’s preseason suffered a double injury with the two Jake stringer and Michael hurley face a race against time to get fit for the season opener.

Hurley is being treated for a leg infection in the hospital and failed to train this week, while Stringer battles Achilles and calf pain.

Stringer left Essendon’s training session on Thursday feeling his calf and was evaluated by the team’s medical staff before undergoing post-workout checkups.

According to AFL.com.auStringer’s injury does not appear to be a “serious setback.”

Stringer, including The 2020 season has been crippled by a syndesmosis injury, struggled with Achilles’ issues throughout the preseason and had just joined Essendon’s full training squad.

The 26-year-old is expected to be key to coaching Ben Rutten’s attacking line in 2021 following the off-season departures of Joe Daniher and Orazio Fantasia.

Although the injury is a huge blow, Stringer is expected to recover in time for Essendon’s first-round clash against Hawthorn on March 20.

Hurley’s infection also comes at an inopportune time for the Bombers’ forward structures, with the veteran set to play forward this season.
